Contract type

Open Ended

A postdoctoral research associate position is available in the School of Chemistry at the University of Bristol. The research associate will work under the supervision of Dr Beatrice Collins and Professor Jonathan Clayden. The position is funded by the Leverhulme Trust and is available from the 1st October 2020, with funding for 36 months.

The research project involves the development of a new class of autonomous rotary molecular motor driven by biocatalytic processes. The proposed motors will exhibit continuous directional rotation about a carbon–carbon single bond driven by a chemical fuel. Enzymes will be used to mediate concurrent opposing stereoselective redox processes, setting up a non-equilibrium steady state and driving constant dynamic conformational rotation. A range of analytical, mechanistic, and computational methods will be employed to analyse the out-of-equilibrium behaviour of the system and to confirm the molecular-level directional motion. Successful motors will be integrated into more complex supramolecular systems, amplifying the controlled motion at the single molecule level into measurable effects at the macroscopic scale.

We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic researcher, with excellent organizational and communication skills. The successful candidate will hold (or be working towards) a PhD in organic chemistry. While previous experience in the field of artificial molecular machines is not required, experience in modern synthetic chemistry, including the design and execution of multi-step syntheses, is essential. Experience in the field of biocatalysis is also desirable.

For informal enquiries, please contact Dr Beatrice Collins (bs.lefanucollins@bristol.ac.uk) or Professor Jonathan Clayden (j.clayden@bristol.ac.uk).

The University of Bristol welcomes applications from all members of our community and are particularly encouraging those from diverse groups, such as members of the LGBT+ and BAME communities, to join us.
