The Department of Economic History and International Relations is a dynamic and strong education and research department in the Faculty of Social Sciences at Stockholm University. Its International Relations (IR) section aims to be nationally leading and internationally prominent within its field of research and education, focusing especially on the three IR sub-fields of International Security, International Institutions, and International Political Economy.
Project description
The researcher position is associated with BuildERS (Building European Communities’ Resilience and Social Capital) financed by Horizon 2020, European Union funding for Research and Innovation and launched on 1st May 2019 and running through the duration of this position. The BuildERS project aims to bring local and international governance levels together for more effective resilience in the face of increasingly complex disasters. It will examine what existing national policies in Europe are directed at the resilience of European populations (especially the vulnerable), what gaps exist in national, European, and international policy, and study how social media and social capital interact to shape resilience. Main responsibilities
The role of the researcher in the BuildERS project is to:
- Assist with the general responsibilities of project partnership, including attending consortium meetings (virtual and physical), reviewing and commenting on other partners’ outputs, and fulfilling the more general tasks associated with the project (social media, blogging, etc.)
- Assist with a series of case studies on national disaster planning, including crisis management structures, vulnerability definitions and approaches, risk perception indicators, and social capital awareness of public and private actors
- Lead the work of Stockholm University’s main role in BuildERS: to extract the policy recommedations of the project’s deliverables, aimed at local, national and supranatioal levels
- Represent the project in Brussels-based events
- Liaise with other EU Horizon 2020 projects that have a similar theme as BuildERS.
Qualification requirements
Researchers are appointed primarily for purposes of research and must hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.
Assessment criteria
Applicants should meet the following requirements:
- A completed, or close-to-completed, PhD degree in a subject related to the topic above (examples include International Relations, Political Science, Public Administration, Global Governance, International Security, etc.)
- Research experience in fields related to the BuildERS theme: social capital, resilience, disaster management, climate security, crisis management, risk management, or European/global governance
- Experience working in collaborative research environments, generally, and participating in research projects, specifically
- Demonstrable track record in spoken and written English, especially as directed to policymaking as well as academic audiences
- Demonstrable research skills, including data collection, data summarising, analysis, and writing-up results.
In the appointment process, special attention will be given to research experience, research skills, and writing expertise. Additional emphasis will be placed on communication and collaboration skills.
Terms of employment
This is a full-time position, starting 14 September 2020 for a period of 1 year.
