Are you a postdoctoral palliative care researcher wanting to move abroad? 


We welcome expressions of interest from outstanding early career researchers of any nationality with a strong interest in palliative, end of life and bereavement care wishing to apply for a MSCA-2022 Postdoctoral Fellowship (PF) to join our Group in Portugal. We will support and guide the application process of one selected candidate.

The Palliative, End of life and Bereavement Care Group is a dynamic research group at the Faculty of Medicine of University of Coimbra in Portugal. We currently hold two 5-year research projects funded by the European Commission, which include an European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant (EOLinPLACE, 2022-26). Our international team brings together researchers and clinicians from different fields, working closely with patients and caregivers to act as a hub for interdisciplinary research and innovation. Dr. Barbara Gomes, leader of the Palliative, End of life and Bereavement Care Group, will offer support and guidance to the selected candidate in his/her application process. Dr. Gomes is specialist in proofing care at the end of life, to ensure it matches people’s preferences and priorities. She won competitive EC-funding for several projects, has published over 70 papers (H index = 29; >5000 citations in high impact journals, with first authored publications in the BMJ, the Lancet, Annals of Oncology and JAMA).

The project


Your project must align with the aim of our Group, which is to generate cutting-edge research on the most pressing issues that respond to the real life needs of people in their last years to days of life and their caregivers, while they provide care and face bereavement. We particularly welcome expressions of interest in new ways of organising at the end of life (generalist or specialist), interventions that support people at home, research in psychosocial and spiritual care including bereavement care, and pediatric palliative care.


Eligibility criteria


Doctoral degree awarded no more than eight years before the deadline (14 September 2022). The applicant can be of any nationality and must not have spent more than 12 months in Portugal in the three years immediately prior to 14 September 2022. If you have applied to MSCA-PF in 2021 and got a score less than 70%, you are not eligible to apply in 2022.




Please send your CV (max. 4 pages), a motivation letter explaining why you wish to apply for a MSCA -PF with us and how this fits your career objectives, and 2 to 3 paragraphs outlining a possible research project.
