To synthesize bimetallic iron oxides FenMnOp (with M= W, Nb or Ta for example) by different methods.
To ensure structural characterizations (X-ray diffraction, neutrons, SEM, TEM...).
To carry out electrical and magnetic characterizations (resistivity, magnetization, dielectric constant...).
To perform photocatalytic tests.

The topic concerns the development of bimetallic iron oxides for use in solar water splitting. The aim is to find an alternative to TiO2, the most widely used semiconductor currently, by developing more efficient materials that are adapted to operate over a wider range of the solar spectrum, stable, eco-compatible and abundant.
The aim is to explore the {Fe,M,O} systems with M a non-toxic and cheap metal, using various synthesis methods to control structures and microstructures. By playing on compositions and substitutions, it will be possible to adjust the position of the valence and conduction bands of the prepared semiconductors. It will be necessary to control the quality of the materials obtained thanks to numerous complementary analysis techniques. A large part of the work will be devoted to the characterization of the magnetic and/or electrical and/or optical and/or photocatalytic properties. The establishment of structure-property relationships will necessarily provide interesting information for understanding the chemical and physical phenomena involved in these multifunctional materials.

This work will be carried out within the framework of Labex EMC3, in collaboration with the GPM in Rouen and the ICPEES in Strasbourg.

Eligibility criteria

The candidate must have an excellent knowledge of materials science, including solid experience in the refinement of crystalline and magnetic structures. He/she should also be autonomous and able to conduct research proposals in large-scale facilities and to perform synchrotron and neutron X-ray diffraction experiments.
