Shifting Phenologies: Cross-Scale Interactions among Species
Climate change has resulted in shifts in the timing of spring phenological events, such as leaf unfolding, flowering, bird migration and insect activity. Climate change influences phenology at all trophic levels, but differences in the responses of organisms can result in phenological mismatches, with potential negative impacts on biodiversity. However, availability of data and analysis that show how species interactions are affected by meteorological drivers are scarce. This MRes will use citizen science, acoustic recorders, and pollen traps to collect data on phenological events for a wide range of taxa. New conceptual and methodological challenges associated with identifying the meteorological drivers of phenological events for a range of flora and fauna in Ireland will be explored, and new methods of studying biotic interactions across different trophic levels (e.g., vegetation, insects, birds) will be developed.
The successful applicant should have a good primary degree (First or Upper Second Class Honours) in an appropriate discipline (geography, ecology, environmental science, earth science). The successful applicant should be highly self-motivated, a good communicator in both written and oral format, and have quantitative skills. Experience of statistics and/or computer programming would be an advantage.
